First up…’self watering is a bit of misnomer. Basically it consists of a reservoir, so the plants are drinking rather than being sprinkled.

Anyways, I’m pretty lazy and not the most DIY kinda guy. So i was checking out a few different blogs and things. These all required pretty much two 40l bins, and a sack of potting mix. And all conflicted each other.

Then I stumbled upon this blog. Well it was linked thru on a few other sites, but it certainly was good.

How it works is usually a cheapo bucket, with  colander in the bottom. This has a feeding tube for water, and an over flow tube for making sure your plants don’t drown.

If you are one for pristine astethtics, please LOOK AWAY. However if you are one for a cheap fun way to grow some veg, and are daunted by digging and rotary hoeing feel free to look!

Check out these results though! Bit of potting mix and remembering to fill the reservoir every few days. These aren’t really in chronological order but you get the idea 🙂

Oh, in case you are wondering how the watering thing works, it’s called “capillary action” apparently.

I’ll post a more indepth post later, this is just to whet the whistle.
